Empowering Remote Communities in Kapit, Sarawak: A Standalone Solar Power Solution

In the heart of Kapit, Sarawak, lies a community of indigenous people, isolated from the conveniences of modern infrastructure. While Sarawak boasts abundant energy resources, the geographical challenges of these rural areas make it unfeasible for the national grid to extend its reach. The Sarawak state government, recognizing the need to provide electricity to these remote communities, sought an alternative solution. AD Power Sdn Bhd was honored to be selected as the turnkey solution provider for this ambitious initiative—designing and implementing standalone power stations for several longhouses across the district.

Project Overview: A Comprehensive Approach to Power

As the full turnkey contractor, AD Power Sdn Bhd was responsible for every aspect of the project: from designing and procuring the system, to delivering, installing, integrating, and commissioning it—all within a span of just one year. The solar hybrid system was specifically tailored to meet the energy needs of the longhouses, which can house up to 55 households under one roof.
What is a Longhouse?
Longhouses are a traditional form of communal living in Sarawak, commonly inhabited by indigenous tribes such as the Iban. These long structures can accommodate multiple families in separate living quarters, all under a single roof. They serve as both a residence and a cultural hub, fostering community living and shared responsibilities. In some cases, these longhouses can stretch over 100 meters in length and accommodate several dozen households, making them a truly unique architectural and cultural feature of the region.

Project Impact: Transforming Lives with Solar Power

Before the implementation of the solar hybrid system, villagers in these remote communities relied heavily on daylight to complete daily activities. After sunset, only a handful of villagers with access to longboats or motorcycles would make the long journey to town to buy diesel fuel for generators. Even then, using generators was a costly affair, only available to those who could afford it.

The installation of the solar hybrid system has transformed life in these longhouses. Families now have access to electricity throughout the day, allowing them to power essential appliances like refrigerators to keep food fresh—especially vital for those engaged in trade, such as selling Sarawak pepper or poultry. Television access has also provided exposure to the outside world, expanding their knowledge and understanding of current events.

With electricity available, basic comforts such as lighting and fans have made living conditions much more comfortable. The villagers no longer need to rely on expensive and pollutive diesel generators, drastically reducing their fuel consumption and costs.

Overcoming Challenges with Local Collaboration

Transporting heavy equipment to such a remote site was no small feat. AD Power engaged the local community, whose expertise in navigating the jungle proved invaluable. Used to manually transporting heavy goods, the locals helped carry the necessary equipment, learning about the project in the process. Not only did this foster local engagement, but it also provided the community with employment opportunities—allowing them to earn an income that could be used to purchase new essentials once electricity became available.

The system was strategically installed on higher ground, with guidance from the local villagers who advised on flood-safe locations, ensuring the system’s longevity and resilience against natural disasters.

Sustainability and Future-Proofing: A Scalable Solution

One of the key goals of this project was to provide a sustainable and future-proof solution for the longhouses. The solar hybrid system reduces the need for diesel fuel, cutting costs and emissions for the community. Moreover, the system is designed to be modular and scalable, meaning it can grow with the community. As electricity demands increase, the infrastructure can be upgraded to accommodate future needs without significant rework.

Empowering the Community through Education

As part of our commitment to the long-term success of this project, AD Power provided training to local villagers on basic maintenance and troubleshooting. This enables the community to handle minor issues independently, ensuring the system remains operational with minimal external intervention. Furthermore, we have educated the community on energy efficiency, helping them understand how to manage their electricity consumption wisely. Simple actions such as turning off appliances when not in use or minimizing unnecessary energy use have been encouraged to maximize the benefits of the system and prevent overloading.

Technical Specifications and Energy Management

The system’s capacity ranges from 20kWp to 100kWp, depending on the size of the longhouse. To ensure fairness and sustainable energy consumption, each household is allocated a maximum energy demand of 5kW and up to 10kWh per day. Each household is equipped with an energy limiter that resets daily, ensuring that electricity is evenly distributed among the residents. If a household exceeds its daily quota, the power supply is cut off until the system resets the following day.

Safety and Autonomy: A Self-Sufficient Power Solution

Given the remote location, the system had to be designed to operate autonomously with minimal human intervention. Safety was paramount—especially considering how long it might take for the community to inform us if something went wrong. To address this, we implemented several key features:
  • Fire Protection and Autonomous Shutdown: The system is equipped with automatic safety mechanisms to disengage and protect against any malfunctions or hazards.
  • Online Monitoring and Event Reporting: Satellite internet ensures that real-time system status and event reports can be transmitted back to our monitoring center, allowing us to oversee operations and address potential issues remotely.
These fail-safe measures ensure that the system operates reliably, providing continuous power to the longhouse while protecting both the community and the equipment.

The longhouses in Kapit now enjoy reliable electricity for lighting, communication, and household needs—drastically improving the quality of life for the indigenous people.
